Founder’s Message

From the very beginning, the Mizizi journey has been special and unique. On a personal level, it has addressed two key concerns that for years prior had kept me up at night. The first, as a parent, yearning to give my own children an educational experience goes beyond traditional schooling, offering something that will light their fire for learning. The second, as an educator, constantly questioning, “Will our children, in 20 years, be equipped to be the compassionate leaders and solution architects our future world needs?”

It is widely accepted that fresh approaches are needed if schools are to deliver what our children – our future leaders- truly need. We must move beyond outdated methods and embrace a learning environment that fosters creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and character development. School shouldn’t feel like a drag for kids, but rather an invigorating and inspiring journey. We want our kids to love learning and love life!

At the peak of my teaching and school leadership career, Mizizi came calling, and I was captivated by its warm atmosphere, emphasis on teacher and learner well-being, and innovative educational practices. Mizizi aligned with my philosophy, integrating personalized and differentiated learning in smaller classes, project-based learning, 21st century skills and play-based learning for younger learners. Despite being guided by the British National Curriculum standards and learning outcomes, Mizizi teachers had full freedom to design lessons tailored to individual learner needs. As such, the team was innovative, driven and highly collaborative. I was home.

Our curriculum and classroom practice are guided by our vision to raise compassionate leaders and solution architects that our future world needs. We want our kids to love learning and life; why should they be happy at home but dread school?

From the Head of School, HECKY ODERA


Hecky Odera is an education and human resource professional with over 20 years of experience in school leadership, education management, and human resource management. He holds an MBA in Human Resource Management and is currently undertaking the Certificate of School Leadership and Management at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education . He has worked with SHOFCO, Nairobi Waldorf School, Makini, Oshwal and Mizizi Learning Hub, leading education programs and HR functions. His areas of work include teaching, workforce planning, curriculum design, talent development, and organizational effectiveness. Outside of work, he enjoys watching and supporting Chelsea FC, cooking traditional dishes, spending time with family, and mentoring youth.

We seek out the most innovative and passionate educators and continue to develop them. Mizizi emphasizes Continuous Professional Development for our educators and school leaders, including weekly training, peer-to-peer learning and regular classroom observations with feedback and coaching, fostering a culture of ongoing improvement and excellence.

Origin Story

Mizizi wasn’t born from a blueprint, but from a spark – a question ignited by a group of passionate parents and educators: “What would the ideal school for our children look like?”

Driven by a shared desire for an innovative, future-fit, and deeply African-centered education, we envisioned a learning environment that nurtured not just minds, but hearts and spirits. We longed for a space where children wouldn’t just learn, but thrive – a school they would love to come to every day.

Our journey began with neighbourhood pods – small, intimate groups that fostered connection and collaboration. These pods soon blossomed into “microschools”, each one a vibrant hub of learning and connection, where children benefited from a personalised approach and innovative teaching methods. As our shared vision grew stronger, these microschools eventually merged, forming the Mizizi Learning Hub we know today.

Through this collaborative spirit, we’ve built a school that truly feels like sunshine – warm, vibrant and totally unique.

Mizizi is a 21st-century school with a culture so warm, it feels like sunshine the moment you enter. We have achieved this by investing deeply in our culture, community, and excellence in learning:

  • A Culture of Joy and Well-being: Our foundation lies in fostering a joyful and loving environment. Daily “Connect” sessions provide children with guided experiences that nurture their social, emotional, and ethical well-being. We prioritize the well-being of our teachers, offering professional and personal development opportunities alongside a dedicated weekly wellness afternoon, giving them time for reflection, creativity, planning and rest. This translates into thriving, happy educators who bring a special magic into the classroom.
  • Rooted in Community: Community is the “mizizi” (roots) of our school, providing a sense of belonging and common values from which our young learners grow. Our community thrives on a shared commitment to raising children who are proud of their African identity. From thoughtfully curated classroom libraries to a vibrant calendar of cultural events, family gatherings, and parent-led initiatives, we celebrate identity and community in every aspect of Mizizi life.
  • Excellence in Learning: As educators, we stretch ourselves to make learning creative, engaging and future-fit. Through thoughtfully designed learning spaces, dynamic projects and a developmentally balanced approach – blending outdoor, experiential and hands-on learning in the early years with tech-enabled learning from Year 4 onwards – our goal is to equip Mizizi learners with the wings they need to thrive in an unknown future; setting them up for success in work, life and relationships. At Mizizi, learning is an adventure, not a chore.

It is a joy and honour to serve as School Director and to have the opportunity to play a key role in the evolution of our vibrant community. Witnessing our childrens’ progress and their joy each day leaves me hope-filled for the future.

We believe in creating an environment where learning is joyful, challenges promote growth, and each learner’s uniqueness is celebrated. Our teachers promote meaningful engagement with African knowledge and cultures as a way to cement our learners’ sense of confidence and identity as global Africans. Kiswahili is integrated throughout the program. Commitment to well-being is central, with a focus on social-emotional learning and the development of critical thinking skills. In our Upper Primary classes, we integrate education technology and use digital tools and platforms to learn, communicate and create positive change. We take pride in helping pupils to become lifelong learners with a growth mindset, continuously acquiring new knowledge and skills to adapt to a rapidly changing world.
